Description:
In this two-player turn-based strategy game, players take turns gathering resources, building their rocket, and sabotaging their opponent. Players must be able to adapt to the uncertainty in resource gathering and to sabotage attempts to try to build and launch the perfect rocket. In order to do this players will have to balance their rocket's strength, weight, speed, and efficiency stats effectively. Space Race takes its inspiration from real-life Space Race in the mid 20th century between the United States and Russia.
Intent:
Space Race is a two-player turn-based competitive building game where players compete to build the best rocket ship and launch them into space. Play is supposed to encourage thought and adaptability throughout the game to create a dynamic competitive experience.
Gameplay:
Play is turn-based. Each turn consists of two phases allowing players to first harvest resources and collect gold, then with that gold they can build their rocket. Turns take place back and forth, alternating who goes first each round. At the end of 7 rounds, both rockets will be launched and whoever's rocket travels further is the winner
Resource Gathering
During this phase, players will have the chance to harvest a random amount of resources from two out of the three harvest locations. Each offers a different level of risk and reward. The lumberyard is the lowest risk area and provides the lowest rewards. The mines are a medium-risk area with medium rewards. The oil field is a higher risk area with high rewards. A player’s rewards for each harvest depend on luck and the probability of each area. This allows players to choose riskier options depending on their immediate needs. Resources harvested are automatically sold rewarding them with gold to use for building.
Shop and Build
After gathering and selling resources, the player will be taken to the shop where they can buy components for their ship. Each part has its own set of stats that affect a player's ship. Players buy their components based on the stats they need to help balance their ships. The shop is shared between the two players, allowing players to steal components other players are looking to build. Players can also Sabotage their opponent by forcing them to build any part by spending their own money on the parts for them.
Strategy:
The strategy comes from managing the speed, strength, weight, and efficiency stats on your rocket. There are 4 main components for each of the rockets: Nose Cone, Hull, Fins, and Thrusters. There are three different variations to each component shown below in their complete sets. Each part has its own set of stats associated with them. Two players share the same shop, encouraging them to compete over the best parts. This means that if one player buys the Iron Hull the other player cannot buy it. Often a player might try to take away a piece that the player is looking for causing them to rethink their strategy. This is not the end as you can sabotage the other player by purchasing a piece for them and making their ship unbalanced or by purchasing a different part that can make up for the stats. Space Race forces players to have to adapt to the decisions of the other Nation in order to obtain a victory.
